Kumpal received his Ph.D. in biomedical engineering from Florida International University where he started working on mathematical models exploring nitric oxide transport in the vasculature as nitrite and nitrosothiols. He did his fellowship at Mercer University working on modeling adherence of drugs for HIV and modeling uptake and activation of these drugs into peripheral blood mononuclear cells. He followed this up with another fellowship at University of Florida and FDA working on modeling disease progression and treatment for postmenopausal osteoporosis.
